In an increasingly competitive job market where technology rules the day, you need to use every available resource to help you stand out from other candidates. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a tool that can help you get noticed by recruiters and get your resume moved to the top of the hiring list.
Rabah Al-Ali has seen thousands of resumes come across his desk in 15 years as a recruiter. The CSC talent acquisition manager holds an MBA from Royal Roads University in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, as well as a graduate certificate in strategic human resources management from Royal Roads. He says AI can be used to update and revamp your resume so it more closely matches the job description or ad you’re interested in.

Rabah suggests job seekers use an AI tool to update their resumes so they mirror what the company is looking for. He says you can upload a job posting and your resume to an AI client, which will match the two documents. “AI can identify the gaps between the job requirements and the resume and suggest ways to better align the two.” Suggestions might include changing the wording or adding volunteer work or internship experience.
AI can also help you customize your resume using the parameters of the job description. “You can use AI to search the internet for all job opportunities that match your desired position, responsibilities, and location,” he says. “You’ll get a full list of opportunities.” You can use AI algorithms to analyze job requirements, match them with candidate profiles, and generate cover letters that will get the attention of hiring managers. “Job seekers can use AI to search the internet for roles that best fit their skills and experience. AI tools like Talentprise will scan your CV and match it with available openings found online.”
The human element is still key to the job search, Rabah says. “AI gives you creative input into your resume. Success depends on the prompts that users input into this tool. AI is a tool to assist us, but a lot of people see it as a replacement for critical thinking. They’ll just enter information into the prompt, get the output, then copy, paste, and send.” Job seekers need to make sure AI generates exactly what they want, he says. “You have to enter the proper prompts to get the best results.”
HR professionals also use the human element after the list of candidates has been pared down to those they’d like to contact. “When we call the candidate, we can identify whether their experience was AI-generated or they really have the background we’re looking for,” he says, adding that regardless of whether a candidate applies on a job board or CSC’s website, talent acquisition partners will review and act on the resume.
“When we call them, they have to know what they’re talking about for the job and their experience,” Rabah says. “I recommend job candidates use AI tools to practice interviewing skills. You input all the data and ask the AI to prepare questions a recruiter might ask. It’s a great tool to use as you prepare for an interview.”
From searching for that perfect position to crafting a custom resume and cover letter, Rabah says AI is an invaluable tool for job seekers. “AI can help you get noticed,” he says. “But it’s up to you to convince the recruiter that you’re the right person for the job.”
