What’s your title and how long have you held this role?
I’ve been a marketing specialist for 15 months. I manage campaign logistics and our social calendar, support sales and service, and assist other marketing managers with projects.
What other roles have you held at CSC?
I started here in 2014 in customer service for incorporate.com, taking orders from people who wanted to incorporate their businesses and answering questions. I moved to Records and was there for two or three years, handling company records for incorporate.com. When something had to change for an inc.com record, I was the one who managed that. From there, I went to Global Accounts Receivable and spent another two or three years there. I followed up on people’s invoices, letting them know they had an outstanding balance or helping them with invoice inquiries.
I interviewed for that position because I wanted to do something different. I felt like I had mastered as much as I could in the previous position and wanted a new challenge. Then I saw something was available on the Data Hygiene Team. I like spreadsheets and order, and just had a feeling that it was the next move to make. I did that for about two years and told my leaders there I wanted more responsibilities. And they recommended the position that I’m in and I went for it.
What transferrable skills did you bring with you?
Definitely customer service, organization, and time management, as well as being able to work in a fast-paced environment and multitask and balance responsibilities.
What were your career goals when you started at CSC?
When I started, I didn’t have the foresight to see the opportunities that were ahead of me. I was looking for a stable position I could manage as a new young mother. After gathering a foundation of knowledge in service, I wanted to move on to the backend of things and find more of a leadership role, which I did move into. A new role was created for me and another team member to manage all the incoming orders for incorporate.com.
What do you like about CSC?
It’s great here. When I speak to other people about their job experiences, it’s nothing like this. The benefits and the people—it’s just a nice environment. They hire good people here. Was I qualified to do some of the things I’ve done here? Maybe not on paper, but CSC gives you the chance to learn and expand your skills on the job.
What makes your team different?
Everybody is cooperative and respects each other. They’re open to ideas and they’re just genuinely nice. I needed some help with an invoice, and someone who wasn’t directly on my team spent 30 minutes helping me. We build on each other’s skills and it’s a true cooperative effort.
What gets you excited to come to work in the morning?
I like to be challenged and do new things. It’s just exciting to expand my knowledge and development, and my work helps me do that. There’s always something new to do and learn.
What’s the most interesting thing about working here and the work that you do?
I studied psychology in college, and I like seeing things using that background. I like seeing how we engage people to use our services through our strategy.
I enjoy learning more about business and I want to use this for my future. I’m taking everything I learn and figuring out how can I use that in my personal development. If I wanted to start my own business, I could get the background of it from here and take that into my future.
What are you learning now, and why is it important?
I recently took a course on brand strategy and how to market your brand. I’ve taken other courses on Excel spreadsheets, communication in the workplace, and diversity. I’m always seeking out knowledge to be able to understand the why and how of things.
When you tell people what you do, what surprises them?
I didn’t realize there was so much that goes on behind the scenes for businesses, and I don’t think other people realize that either. Sure, they know there’s a lot that goes into running a business, but they might not understand exactly what it takes. It surprises them that you have to file annual reports and other paperwork every year, and they don’t realize that there’s a business specifically dedicated to all the background tasks it takes to keep a business in compliance.
How’s the work-life balance?
At the end of the day, I can shut off my computer and not have to worry about work again until the morning. And I have plenty of time to do things with my family. The flexibility is amazing. If I have to pick up my kids or change my schedule, it’s super easy to do that. We can work from home if we need to. I get to go outside and sit on the veranda for lunch. It’s just an easy, breezy type of place.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to join CSC or your team?
